Den amerikanske drøm
Abstract
The study investigates the relation between inequality and whether the American dream is a realistic possibility for everyone in the United States. To measure inequality the term Ginikoefficient is used. The study uses mathematical illustrations, polomial regression and integral calculus to explain this term. Futhermore the study investegates the problem by making a comparative rhethorical analysis of the speeches State of Union by Barack Obama from 2014 and Paul Ryan speech on poverty at Cleveland State Univerity from 2012. The analysis shows that the speeches especially characterizes the missing opportunity of having a proper education. The solution to this problem is to strengthen the middle class and the communities and lower the price on education. The study finds that the possibilities of the American dream is strongly influenced by the inequality according to the speeches. It is not a realistic posibility for the lower class and the middle class, because they end up in bad schools. The upper class can afford proper education, so the American dream is still a possibility for this group. All in all is the American dream only a realistic possibility for everyone to a minor extent.
