A royal salute to the Commonwealth

In the article “A royal salute to the Commonwealth” by Peter Oborne, he reflects on the current situation of the Commonwealth and the importance of this organization. Throughout the text, he talks about the different aspects of the Commonwealth, and how it has evolved in the past decades. In this paper I am going to analyze and comment on the article, where part of the focus will be on the writer’s argumentation and the role of the Commonwealth as presented in the text. [Læs mere…]

Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language

The English language is one of the most dominant languages of the world and it is the number one go-to language when having to speak with foreigners. This is something that most people believe is natural and take for granted. However, what we seem to forget, is how English came to be the preferred language globally. It did not just happen as a coincidence. As a result of the colonization and the great English Empire, a lot of people were forced to take English into their lives. This is why we today think of English as the number one language of the world. But what were the consequences for the new English speaking countries, and how have they handled the new way of communicating? This is what the Welshman, Tom Law, describes in his article “Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language” from 2013, where he reflects on the outcome of a whole country replacing their native language with English. In this paper, I am going to analyze and comment on his article, where part of the focus will be on the writer’s tone and style and on how history is used in the text. [Læs mere…]

Living With Strangers

In the essay “Living With Strangers” by Siri Hustvedt, we hear about her experiences with living in two very different cities and how they and their citizens have changed her perspective on meeting strangers. In the beginning of the text, she talks about her childhood, growing up in the countryside of Minnesota, and how the people of her town acted towards each other. Later on in her life, she moves to New York City and discovers how different the urban life is from what she was used to. Not only are there so many more people in NYC, which, by itself, can be very overwhelming, but also the attitude and arrogance of the New Yorkers surprises her. In this paper, I am going to analyze and comment on Hustvedt’s essay, where part of the focus will be on the genre and the attitude to urban living. [Læs mere…]

Owl

Growing up can be scary, because you all of a sudden are on your own. You ought to be able to reminisce at times to seek comfort and fall back on when times were easier. Therefore the transition from being a child to becoming a grown-up can be rather difficult and confusing, and some people have a hard time letting go of the past. The short story Owl by Jackie Kay written in 2012 is about these aspects of a midlife crisis. [Læs mere…]

Stolpestad

The feeling of being stuck in a meaningless life is a terrible feeling. You follow the same routines day in and day out without having a higher purpose and this monotonous lifestyle is hard to change. It is a dull feeling of triviality and indifference, and it will by time subvert a person’s passion and joy for life. That is if the person does not realize the problem and break free of the purposeless lifestyle. This feeling is portrayed in the short story Stolpestad by William Lyshack from 2008, which is about the police officer Stolpestad. [Læs mere…]
