The Hunger Games

Imagine being born into a new world that rose from the ashes of an old world, and imagine, that in this world there is a capitol and around it there are districts – the father away from the capital the poorer the district. You so happen to live in the one farthest away, and your life is a continuous struggle to feed yourself and those close to you. Additional to that, each year, you must risk being sent to an arena where you have to kill young men and women from the other districts in order to survive and win the ‘game’. Let us then conclude that if this were your reality you would be living in a very dystopian world. Would this world of no heartbreak, be what you would consider ideal – a utopia? Or would you shiver from the lack of affection and fret the lack of belonging to what we today know as the ‘family’, would you consider it the worst imaginable scenario – a dystopia? [Læs mere…]

Big brother isn’t watching you

”Hoodies don’t vote, they’ve realised it’s pointless, that whoever gets elected will just be a different shade of the ‘ we don’t give a toss about you’ party”(p.10 l. 92-93). That is the opinion of Russell Brand and quite a lot of other people. But can this opinion that the estrangement of the ‘weak’ youth generation, who are not really included in society, be the cause of the terrible riots that happened in London in 2011? Russell Brand justifies this belief in the following article “big brother isn’t watching you”. It is this justification I am going to focus on in my paper and by doing so analyse his use of various techniques to forward his opinion. [Læs mere…]
