”Big Brother is watching you”

Sådan lyder det klassiske citat fra George Orwells roman 1984, der nærmest er blevet inkarnationen af det berygtede fænomen, vi kender som overvågning. Vi mennesker har altid frygtet denne størrelse, og tanken om at leve i et samfund, hvor hver eneste af vores bevægelser bliver registreret, har kunnet få selv de mest renhjertede personer til at føle sig utrygge. Dette billede er imidlertid ved at ændre sig. Vi er begyndt at acceptere overvågning mere og mere, hvilket har ført til, at vi i dag nærmest betragter det som værende underholdning. Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior

In the article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua, we hear about her experiences with the Chinese way of bringing up your children, and how this has affected her and her family. In the beginning of the text, we are told that the writer, Amy Chua, is a professor at Yale Law School and that she has two daughters. Furthermore, we hear that she sees herself as a so-called “Chinese mother” (l.22). Chinese mothers do not necessarily need to be Chinese, but it is a term to describe a very strict parent with unusual ways of educating their child. A Chinese mother is, in contrast to a “Western parent” (l.25), very focused on their children’s behavior and academic level, and therefore they devote more time to educating their children, compared to Western parents. This type of parenting is what Amy Chua describes throughout the article. In this paper, I am going to analyze and comment on her article. We all live a life filled with everyday procedures and routines. Anything from brushing your teeth in the morning, to picking up your kids on your way home. The human being is a creature of habits, and it is by doing these tasks that we feel safe and secure. Without them, what would our lives look like? Yet, some people are so affected by their everyday routines that they end up being a spectator of their own lives. This is what the policeman, Stolpestad, experience experiences in the short story “Stolpestad” written by William Lychack in 2008. Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language

The English language is one of the most dominant languages of the world and it is the number one go-to language when having to speak with foreigners. This is something that most people believe is natural and take for granted. However, what we seem to forget, is how English came to be the preferred language globally. It did not just happen as a coincidence. As a result of the colonization and the great English Empire, a lot of people were forced to take English into their lives. This is why we today think of English as the number one language of the world. But what were the consequences for the new English speaking countries, and how have they handled the new way of communicating? This is what the Welshman, Tom Law, describes in his article “Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language” from 2013, where he reflects on the outcome of a whole country replacing their native language with English.
