About a Boy

The feeling of loneliness is one that many people know. We know that everyone is special but sometimes you can feel too “special” – and suddenly you’re not special, but “weird”. Not only will most people feel different because they’re weird but they will also feel lonely because it isn’t very socially accepted to be different. Why are some people different – weird even in the eyes of the rest of society? And how important is it to be a part of a group? In the short story “About a Boy” we get some insight into the life of Marcus, a lonely, weird boy.

The story starts in medias res with Marcus being worried, afraid even, of the next day. One of the themes comes into play here as Marcus is stressed because he is being bullied at school. Normally he would involve his mother and she would save him but this time she is actually a part of the problem. She is a single mother and raised Marcus by herself – because of her, Marcus turned out the way he did – and this is the problem. [Læs mere…]

Abduction

What are the deciding factors in a person’s life? What makes you turn out the way you do? For some time now we have known about the role of genetics in life and fate – they are the foundation of how a person is going to turn out. However, genetics aren’t the only thing that shapes a person as he or she grows up – another thing is upbringing, how a person is raised. This is the subject in the short story “Abduction”.

“Abduction” starts out with a 1st person narrator commenting on certain events that make up the actual story. It begins in medias res with “I wanted to do her in” (“Abduction”, p. 1, l. 1) which gives the reader a basic impression of Ann, the main character, about whom this is said. The narrator who turns out to be Ann’s older sibling gives a further bad impression of Ann, blaming her and calling her “a killer” (p. 1, l. 10). Contrasting to this emotional and subjective beginning is the story itself which is written without further personal comments on Ann’s behavior and where the narrator also becomes less visible to the reader – though the narrative technique using a subjective narrator makes it so that neither Ann’s nor her brother’s feelings or thoughts are expressed. A Trip to Grand Rapids

All parents know that letting go of your children can be hard – maybe even the hardest thing that a person will do in his or her lifetime. After watching them grow up, knowing their sorrows and delights, it must be a depressing moment when you first realize that your children don’t need you anymore, that you can’t protect them from the big, bad, world any longer. And maybe your children don’t even want you to. The process is necessary; the roads must split to some degree for your children to have a good life.

This is the major theme in the short story “A Trip to Grand Rapids”, where the main character Roger is in a dilemma regarding his two daughters. [Læs mere…]

Hamlet

Abstract

This paper analyses the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare with special and investigates the problems regarding translation. Hamlet reflects The Elizabethan World Picture and is about Hamlet, a young student who comes home for his father’s funeral and his mother’s remarriage. This marriage causes Hamlet to develop a misogynistic attitude because of an unresolved Oedipal conflict which ruins his relationship with Ophelia, though he still loves her. Throughout the play Hamlet develops from being an individual “thinker” to being an “actor” who can avenge his father’s murder. While developing he must pretend to be mad to protect himself but he also becomes mad in reality because of all the corruption in the Danish Court. Because of this he also becomes corrupt himself who can kill people with no remorse. Another theme in addition to “Seeming and Being” and corruption is the division Hamlet feels. He must sacrifice some of himself for the duty he has to his family. These themes are relevant even today and makes sure the play is analyzed, interpreted and translated anew even today. There are many problems when translating and it is regarded as almost impossible. Therefore there are different things a translator must take into consideration especially when translating Shakespeare who uses many linguistic devices. This is seen in Lembcke and Sarvig’s translations of Hamlet where choices must be made when it comes to Hamlet’s ambiguous lines. Here the translators interpret and translate differently as Lembcke takes a more direct approach, translating almost word for word and giving a formal equivalence, whereas Sarvig bases his translation more on his interpretation of the text trying to restore some of the original impression of the lines – in contrast to these is Jensen’s translation of “the nunnery scene” where a more dynamic equivalence is achieved.
