Abstract
This project investigates the recurrent epidemics of plaque in Denmark from the 14th century to the 18th century based on an historical and a mathematical approach. This project gives an insight into the initiatives the authorities took to prevent the epidemic in the 18th century. Both the preventive measures, but also the steps the authorities took during the epidemic. This knowledge enables the handling of the plague in perspective to the management of epidemics in our days.
Through a mathematical method this project will illustrate the historical perception of the plaque and the development of the epidemic in Copenhagen in the 18th century. This project will also show the Euler method to deal with the mathematical methods. And discuss the prerequisites for the use of the methods.
Through an analysis of a poster and letters this project will display the importance of the authorities reaction.
The mathematical methods which have ben used in the project are the SIR- and SEIRS-models in order to describe the epidemic in a varied way. Through the experiment it is concluded that the models are unable to provide a definitive picture of the epidemic, but can provide a simple understanding of the plagues development. [Læs mere…]
