Vietnamkrigen

Abstract

The study examines the American involvement in the Vietnam War, and the different consequences that this caused. During the war in Vietnam, a lot of American citizens got more and more upset about the war itself, thinking that it was meaningless for American soldiers to die for a cause that they did not believe in. Also the Medias massive covering of the war enlarged the protests, and pictures and videos of dead or massacred Vietnamese civilians aroused great disapproval in the Western world of the American government.

The paper also contains an analysis of how the book “The Things They Carried” shows the influence that the war had on the soldiers. The author of the book, Tim O’Brien, was a soldier in Vietnam himself, and in the book he tries to give a true picture, both of the war in general, and of the war that he experienced himself.

The study discusses whether or not the USA has learned something from their failure in Vietnam, compared to how they handle the war in Iraq.

It concludes that the Vietnam War had a great impact on the way of thinking for many young men and woman from that time, and that it had a horrible influence on the soldiers – who had very high suicide rates among them in the time after the war. It also concludes that there are too many similarities between Vietnam and Iraq, and that this can be a bad thing for the USA. [Læs mere…]

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to account for how cloning is carried out, and why it is such a controversial topic today when almost anything is scientifically possible. This will be done primarily by focusing on advantages and disadvantages of both therapeutic cloning and in particular reproductive cloning, which was employed in the creation of Dolly the sheep. The language and terms of biology will be applied to comprehend why the legislation is how it is. To get a better understanding of the philosophical and sociological aspects of cloning, the novel The Secret by Eva Hoffman will be analyzed and interpreted with emphasis on a character sketch of the protagonist, who is a clone. The Secret deals with these exact consequences of modern science, and therefore the novel is used to not only get an idea of why scientific progress is sometimes feared by many, but especially also to discuss the ethics of cloning and science in general. With a look into the future of human cloning the study concludes whether or not it will ever be a scientific and ethical possibility. On a final note it is stated in the study that for mammal cloning to become a successful reality, it would need a redefinition of what it means to be human, and thereby create what Mary Shelley would have called The Modern Prometheus. Indledning

Den dag i dag er der mange læger, som specialiserer sig i behandlingen af tromber. Dette sker hovedsageligt i forlængelse af, at der i det postmoderne samfund gennem bl.a. stress, rygning, usund kost mm.(hvilket kan kategorisere det som en livsstilssygdom), har en større tendens til at danne tromber og derved være i risikozonen for at få slagtilfælde. Alene i USA er det angivet at der hvert år er 700 000 mennesker, som får iskæmisk slagtilfælde, hvilket vil sige at de får et slagtilfælde grundet manglende ilttilførsel, hvilket sker ved tromber, da disse danner en blokade i vitale organer, så som hjernen. Det er også angivet at der er mellem 8-12 % af de mennesker, som før inden for 30 dage, altså det svarer til mellem 56 000 og 84 000 årligt. Alkohol og antabus

Indledning

Alkohol er et gammelt rusmiddel, der har været kendt siden Oldtiden, hvor man havde kendskab til gæring af forskellige frugtsafter. Siden da har det været anvendt i utallige kulturer, bl.a. var det en fast bestanddel af de gamle grækeres hverdag. I dag er det et af de mest brugte og lettilgængelige rusmidler. Den rus, der fremkaldes ved indtagelse af alkohol, har en hæmningsløsende, stimulerende og afslappende effekt, som mange holder af. Det er derfor ikke tilfældigt, at man til et selskab starter med en lille drink. Moderate mængder af alkohol kan således have en positiv effekt. På den anden side har alkohol i større mængder mange negative effekter både fysiologisk, socialt og samfundsmæssigt. Det største problem er nok alkoholafhængighed, der formentlig har eksisteret lige så længe som rusmidlet. Der er endnu ikke fundet nogen helbredende medicin til behandling af alkoholisme, men præparatet antabus med disulfiram som det aktive stof, kan anvendes som afvænningsmiddel. [Læs mere…]
